Vittles Away
Montreal Edition

Small terrace outside, on Park Avenue

Rich, buttery, and light ! Muy delicioso !

We love authentic Mexican food, and this place always has us returning for more. This funky little restaurant is located on the busy street of Park Avenue, between St. Viateur and Bernard streets. Its popularity has grown in the past few years, and as a result, the restaurant has recently expanded its dining area. During the spring and summer, the terrace in front of the restaurant is a great place for a meal, and some people-watching.

Just like their dining space, their menu has expanded as well, and now offer a big variety of authentic Mexican items. There are soups, salads, quesadillas, tostados, tortas, tacos, and big tortillas. There's even grilled grasshoppers if you're up for the challenge. And there's always cerveza, margaritas, cocktails, and agua frescas to help wash it all down. They open late, with late-night taco specials for the night owls.

We've always been partial to the soft tacos with their fresh ingredients. Unlike other Mexican restaurants, you are able to order tacos individually. With 11 different tacos to choose from, you can mix and match them as you wish.

Their torta sandwiches are fantastic, and very substantial. There are 11 types to choose from, and there are even 3 vegetarian options offered.

Owner Mariano Franco told us that he bakes the bread himself, for the torta sandwiches and croissants (!) which are served in his restaurant. We've always loved the taste of their breads, and now we know why. His croissants are among our favorites in Montreal.
Here are some food items that we've ordered :
-
Ensalada de Nopales - sliced Nopal cactus salad, crisp, fresh, and tart

-
Guacamole - chunky avocado mashed with onion, tomato, and cilantro, served with tortilla chips

-
Mole Verde tacos - shredded pork, served with a savory coriander sauce (delicious)
-
Mole De Res tacos - tender and tasty braised beef, onions, and cilantro
-
Al Pastor tacos - tasty marinated pork, with pineapple, onions, and cilantro
-
Pierna tacos - shredded pulled pork loin, onions, and cilantro
-
Papas con Rajas tacos - potatoes with red peppers and onions, sour cream, and feta

-
Torta Cubana - breaded beef escalope, pulled pork, ham, topped with mayonnaise, cheese, black
bean spread, avocado, caramelized tomatoes and onions
On Sundays, there are a few brunch items offered. We've had their Chilaquiles con Huevos, which were very tasty. Fried corn tortillas are cooked in salsa, and topped with avocado and feta, then served with savory scrambled eggs cooked with tomato, peppers, and onions, and a mound of delicious beans. It's definitely not your usual bacon and eggs with toast.

If you want to try some authentic Mexican street food, without the typical nacho cheeses, give this place a try. It's not a fancy place, but the food is great. Ta Chido (short for esta chido), which means "It's cool !" We can vouch for that name, and recommend that you come for a taste of authentic Mexico. We've been fans for many years, and we're so happy that others are becoming fans too.
