Asian Fortune Cat with a Lucho libre mask

Delicious pork confit, shredded and served with onions, cilantro

When we first discovered this place a few years ago, it was just starting up. Opening up a Mexican taco restaurant in the middle of Chinatown was such a novel idea that we just had to try it out. What we found was a simple, yet well decorated little restaurant that served fresh and unique tacos. It hadn’t even gotten its liquor license yet.
Fast forward to today, and it has grown in popularity through social media and word of mouth. During Montreal's festival season, when the city is full of tourists and festival goers, this place is jam-packed, and with good reason. Perfect for a quick meal, or as a late night eatery, this isn’t your average nacho cheese & refried bean type of Mexican restaurant. It has a great vibe, there’s good eats, and there’s cerveza & tequila !

What makes them really unique is the mixture of the 2 cultures. Located at the edge of Chinatown, they serve Mexican food in Chinese bowls and platters. Even their fortune cat is wearing a lucho libre mask. Hilarious !
The décor is trendy, and Mexican street-themed. There are several small tables that can each seat 4 people, as well as two long tables that can be shared by many customers. During the summer, they open their big sliding doors to give the restaurant an open street-level atmosphere.
As a starter, each table gets a complimentary basket of homemade tortilla chips, accompanied by small dishes of their mild and spicy salsas.
Even though the menu is fairly simple, there are many varieties of soft tacos. Each plate comes with 3 soft corn tortillas. The toppings are fresh and tasty, and the tortillas are rich in corn taste and texture. Their guacamole is really good, with lots of homemade tortilla chips accompanying it.
Of the tacos listed on the menu, we’ve had the following :
-
Pastor (traditionally known was Tacos Al Pastor, these tacos contain orange juice & chili marinated pork, shaved from a spit, served with onions, cilantro, grilled pineapple, avocado sauce)
-
Carnitas (pork confit (slow cooked in oil till tender, then shredded), served with onions, cilantro, radish, grilled tomato sauce)
-
Rosarito (beer battered shrimp, crunchy red cabbage, chipotle mayo, pico de gallo, and avocado sauce)
-
Fish tacos which were their daily taco special
This is a great fun place. The location is unexpected, and the food is exceptionally tasty and satisfying.
