Soups, salads, tacos, quesadillas, tortas, tamales, ....

Located at the edge of Jean Talon Market in Little Italy, this restaurant/store serves up some authentic Mexican cuisine. It’s perfectly located, with one entrance off Jean Talon Street, and the other entrance right off a path in the Jean Talon Market. In between the 2 doors is a big store (with Mexican products that can’t be found in regular supermarkets), a kitchen area, and many tables for customers.
There’s also a big covered terrace outside, on the Market side, with loads of tables to suit any number of customers. It looks out into the market, with all the picturesque produce and the hustle & bustle of people walking by. It’s a great place to relax, have a bite, and people-watch.
Service is fast and friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. A complimentary basket of colorful crunchy corn chips arrives very quickly to the table, along with 3 types of salsas : mild (red), chipotle & mild (tan), and spicy chili (green). They’re all great, and are great appetizers as you wait for your meal.
The menu offering is huge, with many kinds of soups, salads, tamales, quesadillas, tortas, and tacos that you wouldn’t normally find in other restaurant menus. Where else can you find tortilla soup or cactus salad or tongue tacos ?
Even their list of tacos is more varied and unique than you would find elsewhere --- lamb, steak, chorizo, beef, chicken, and tongue ! You get 4 corn tortillas per order, at less than $10. Unlike other places, the toppings vary from one type of taco to another, and are tasty and abundant.
Here are a few items from their vast menu that we’ve ordered :
-
Guacamole - delicious and creamy, served with loads of tortilla chips
-
Al Pastor tacos - a MUST, and absolutely delicious
- juicy pork that has been marinated in orange juice and spices, then
shredded and served with grilled pineapple, pico de gallo, and cilantro
- it’s messy, it’s delicious !
-
Suadero tacos - moist veal belly that has been marinated in herbs & lime juice
- it’s tasty, and a real textural delight

-
Lengua de Ternero veal tongue that has slow cooked with avocado leaves, and served with
onions, salsa, and cilantro

-
Pescado tacos - fish tacos that served with grilled vegetables

-
Hibiscus water - cool and refreshing agua fresca drink; perfect with the meal
In the past, we’ve passed by for their brunch menu on the weekends, which offer such delights as Huevos Rancheros and Divorciados (a plate of tortillas filled with meat, and smothered with 2 different colored sauces like the flag).

We highly recommend this place. It’s great authentic Mexican food, with good prices, and a super location.
